EKG Q & A

What is an EKG?

The more you know about the heart, the more you realize just how incredible it is. The heart is constantly in motion, squeezing and pumping blood throughout your body for your entire life, never stopping to rest. Even more incredible, this squeezing, or beating, of your heart is controlled by electrical impulses. Small jolts of electricity signal your heart to pump in an incredibly consistent and regular pattern, giving off a series of messages at precisely the right moment.

The pattern of these electrical signals carries a lot of information regarding the health and state of your heart. Though your heart may beat in a regular rhythm for the majority of your life, it is possible for these impulses to become abnormal, potentially signaling deeper problems. As such, it is incredibly important to be able to measure these electrical signals, as they can provide a picture into your heart health.

An EKG is a specialized medical diagnostic tool that measures these electrical impulses in a highly detailed manner, creating results that essentially tell a story about the functioning of your heart, at least to the trained eye of your doctor. These results can be used to diagnose heart conditions and inform proper treatment.

When is an EKG helpful?

An EKG can be useful in many situations, including:

  • Diagnose a heart attack
  • Check the health of your heart
  • Diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Diagnose heart conditions such as heart disease

This is a partial list. If you have questions regarding EKGs, your doctor will be happy to speak with you in detail.

What should I expect at my appointment?

During the EKG, the technician will attach electrodes to specific areas of your chest and abdomen. These electrodes will be connected to an EKG and serve to pick up on the electrical activity of your heart. You may need to remove certain clothing to be able to correctly place the electrodes. Depending on the specific test being done, it may be a quick process or last a bit longer. The team at Advantage MRI will guide you through the process to ensure your comfort and peace of mind.
